Here We Are Again

press release

The great Fannie Lou Hamer proclaimed, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

James Baldwin penned, “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”

George Floyd used his final breaths to say, “I can’t breathe.”

Protestors around the world screamed on repeat, “No justice. No peace.”

We even told you, “We Stand Against.”

We told you, “We rest our case.”

Yet here we are, again.

A few days after the anniversary of the insurrection on the nation’s Capitol.

Just days following multiple mass shootings in our very own communities.

Counting the many days and hours of the many inhumane casualties caused by political unrest around the world.

Here we are again, facing another video.

Video footage of a man’s life being snuffed away.

Video footage of police brutality.

Video footage that triggers the ever-present effects of Black trauma.

Video footage shocks the conscious of people of color all over the world.

Video footage that thrusts each of us back into the harsh reality of the complexities of race, power, and justice.

Video footage that sheds light on the depths of our inhumanity.

Here we are again begging the question -

When will this stop being what we are accustomed/expect to happen?

When will institutions that are given the great responsibility of enforcing the law follow and be held accountable by the law?

When will we stop turning a blind eye or choosing a colorblind one in institutions that disproportionally impact Black and Brown communities?

When will “freedom and justice for all” really be for all?

This, like all of the tragedies before, should have never happened and should never happen again.

We can do better.

Tyre Nichols and countless others deserve better.

As we send sincerest condolences to the Tyre Nichols family, we also reaffirm our dedication to fighting for the type of justice that embraces and acknowledges the plight and fight of communities of color. We will not will continue to stand in the gap for them while also supporting each other as members of this community of excellence.
